BIOGRAPHY

Raised by parents who were part of Singapore’s pioneer generation, Sebastian Sim has travelled around the world and tried his hand at various industries - all in search of different experiences and cultures. His travels have taken him to countries such as Pakistan and Turkey, and he has gone from being a bartender at Boat Quay to being a prison officer at a maximum security prison.

Under the pen name 岳观铭, he has written a series of wuxia novels. His first English novel, Let’s Give It Up For Gimme Lao!, was the finalist for the 2015 Epigram Books Fiction Prize and has been shortlisted for both the Popular Readers’ Choice Awards 2016 (English (Adult) Books Category) and the Singapore Book Awards 2017. His second novel, The Riot Act, was the winner of the 2017 Epigram Books Fiction Prize.

Since then, Sebastian and his books have been featured in newspapers and literary journals, including The Straits Times and the Asia Literary Review. In 2018, he was featured in an episode of Channel NewsAsia’s web series, City of Opportunities. He has also been invited to give literary talks and more recently, to be a panelist in the 2018 Singapore Writer’s Festival.

Currently holding a day job in event management, Sebastian continues to write whenever he can. Outside of writing, he enjoys backpacking, trekking and weiqi (围棋).
